Royal Pains is a show that lives or dies on the chemistry of its two brothers, but as we all know, good story-telling requires conflict. The writers are struggling to meld these divergent needs. Hank and Evan are having a very familiar, very realistic family fight about where to take their joint business and how to do it. As realistic as this is, viewers want to watch Hank and Evan together because that has been a big part of the appeal of the show.
To meet both needs, Hank and Evan have begun to mend their personal relationship but their business relationship remains on the rocks. This allows the two brothers to interact in terms of the plot and not be constantly at each other's throats. I was glad to see Hank learn this episode just how much Evan does and how valuable it is as Hank is in trouble without Evan, but Evan is having trouble replacing Hank as well.
The disagreement and the conflict is realistic, true to the characters as they have been depicted and grown for the last three seasons and excruciating to watch. I don't know what the writers can offer as alternate conflict but I don't like the conflict of Evan and Hank, even though I love the show.
