I was beginning to wonder if James Bond was dead, but along comes Daniel Craig to breathe new life into the role, giving us a lean, mean 007 that blows previous Bonds away. Martin Campbell went back to the basics, retooling Bond and giving him a much more physical presence, reminiscent of Sean Connery. From the opening sequence we see we are in for a real treat, as Campbell takes nothing for granted. He knows he has to earn the audience's respect, and he does with a thrilling chase scene in the chaotic urban center of an African republic.

Bond really comes across as a rogue agent in Casino Royale, stealing his way into M's apartment to leave her coded messages, taking risks that threaten painstaking operations and getting himself into jams that require MI6 to bail him out. This is a young impetuous Bond, overanxious and thrilling to watch as Craig fills his role with the energy of a stage actor.

There is also one of the best villains in recent years with Mads Mikkelsen as the cold blooded Le Chiffre. He heads an international cartel not so much bent on world destruction as on taking advantage of the chaos in which we live. He is a much more believable villain than Spectre and relies on much simpler methods of getting his piece of flesh from someone.

It is also refreshing to see Bond have a real love interest in Eva Green, not the usual banter that rings hollow. Bond is not afraid to expose himself in this movie, revealing a much more vulnerable figure than we have seen before.

MI6 also finds itself as a much more porous organization, capable of being infiltrated so that Bond doesn't know who to trust in key moments. All he has is the support of M, played to deadpan perfection by Judi Dench.

Everything about this movie is fresh and clean, including the opening credits. Bond hasn't looked this good since the early films in the series with Sean Connery. There is even an amusing scene where Bond wins a 1964 Aston Martin in a poker game, a tip of the hat to Goldfinger.

One of the biggest treats of the 2007 television season was "Damages," a wicked and wonderful legal thriller from FX. Headlined by Glenn Close, I expected to enjoy this show--but I wasn't prepared for the level of sophistication, complexity, and intelligence it offered up from its first twisty, and twisted, moments. Made for adults, this drama demands attention and may not be for the casual viewer. With its intricate plotting and structure, the story is told from different time periods interwoven throughout each episode. Essentially, snippets of the story are presented in each time frame, so the audience is left to speculate about the full truth in any given instance. However, as the season progresses, the pieces start to connect in unexpected ways that can both surprise and frustrate. I'd compare the narrative flow of "Damages" to that of a fine novel--telling you just enough so that you are tantalized to stick around for the next chapter.

The plot of "Damages" is a knotty web that is difficult to describe briefly. Ostensibly, the show revolves around a naive young lawyer played by Rose Byrne. The opening scenes show a bedraggled and bloodied Byrne stumbling down the streets of New York--apparently the victim (or perhaps the perpetrator) of an act of violence. Cut to six months earlier and a proper introduction is made. Byrne is seduced and recruited by a major law firm run by Glenn Close. Close seems to have a hidden agenda, but Byrne is quickly overcome by the trappings of success and acceptance. The firm is handling an enormous class action lawsuit against one of the town's most prominent businessmen, played by Ted Danson, and Byrne ends up squarely in the midst of much legal intrigue. What follows includes lying, blackmail, corruption, and even murder--no one in this story remains an innocent.

While I actually think the plot is the real star of "Damages" (I don't think I've ever said that about a TV show before)--it certainly doesn't hurt that the cast is uniformly excellent. Don't be surprised if you see Close front and center come awards time. Her thinly veiled menace and cutting remarks make for classic villainy, but Close pulls it off in a way that you can't help but love! Byrne and all the key supporting players are solid and believable. I particularly liked Zeljko Ivanek and Peter Facinelli, but the real revelation to me was Ted Danson. Honestly, I've followed Danson since he was a bit player in "Body Heat" and I think this is by far his best role. Mixing equal parts charm and bile, this is a great actor in a beautifully written role.

Again, I don't recommend "Damages" to everyone--I only wish I could! If, however, you love sophisticated drama--give this a shot. The DVD format is the perfect way to watch this show at your own pace and enjoy all its subtleties, surprises, and delights. But, be reminded, if you sit down to watch this show--WATCH IT! Otherwise, you might not appreciate how intricately put together "Damages" really is. KGHarris, 12/07.

At first, I wasn't sure if this was a comedy or a drama and I barely understood their accents and slang. I stayed with the show though and my time was rewarded. Not only does "Gavin and Stacey" get easier to understand but it quickly reveals itself as a very funny, sweet, and unique series.

All the characters are interesting and multi-faceted with the best being Gavin's mom and Stacey's uncle. While the show is titled "Gavin and Stacey" and revolves around their relationship, the real drama comes from their respective best friends, Smithy and Nessa. If you ask me the show is really about Smithy and Nessa's relationship.

Series one highlights include the great shots of the English countryside and London in episode one and Matt Lucas' appearance in episode four.

I've read the episode in the book but never seen it in America. It kept true to the story. It was nice viewing one of my favorite doctors in a story line I'm familiar with but never seen. After having seen most of Seasons 1-4, I find each of them to be equally excellent.

This show is like a warm glove or comforter. As you sit down to watch, you know that you'll be entertained without forced sex or violence whose only purpose would to hype up audience ratings.

The success of a show like this depends upon great acting, which it has, interesting characters, which it has in abundance, quick but not hurried pacing, which it has, and a combination of new and continuing story lines, which it has.

It has a strong and very competent lead character, a love interest, and the Cornwall village, a stable and omnipresent character in itself. It is very smart and aware, does not pander to or disparage its characters, and does not insult the audience's intelligence.

So, relax and enjoy your next 45 minutes!

Like the stubborn curmudgeon I am, I keep thinking that with each viewing of MY SISTER'S KEEPER I will finally be able to keep the emotions this film releases at arm's length and watch the movie strictly on its merits. What an idiot I am. Having viewed this film numerous times, I am just as emotionally moved--and drained--as I was when I first saw it in the cinema--when I sat a few rows back from a distraught teen girl who sobbed hysterically during the last half hour.

Sure, there are countless movies about disease, suffering, familial conflict, and death; so why does MY SISTER'S KEEPER strike such a resolute emotional chord? For me, it has to do with the five members of the Fitzgerald family; not only are they totally believable--in their actions and interactions--but they connect with the audience, and the film respects each character enough to allow him or her to be fully vetted and explored. The plot is, quite simply, titanic: Anna (Abigail Breslin), an 11-year-old girl who is a test tube baby brought into the world to donate body parts for her cancer-stricken sister, Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), suddenly retains an attorney (Alec Baldwin in, for once, a very likable role) to sue for medical emancipation from her parents, Sara and Brian (Cameron Diaz and Jason Patric). Of course the lawsuit throws the Fitzgeralds into further disarray, yet the story moves along beautifully despite all the conflict and turmoil, especially in the form of numerous flashbacks that serve to fill in the blanks for a family ultimately bonded--however dysfunctionally--through love.

I was, and am, extraordinarily moved by this film, whether it be via Anna's yearning for innocence lost, Brian's remarkable love and devotion to all of his family, brother Jesse's (Evan Ellingson) inner turmoil, or Sara's profound determination to save her daughter's life--no matter what the cost to the rest of the family. Through the depictions of these characters we forget we are watching a film; instead we feel we are privy to a front row seat as the Fitzgeralds struggle through an experience that can either bring them all together--or drive them forever apart. As compelling as it is poignant, MY SISTER'S KEEPER is an exceptional examination of human interaction and tragedy, with a silver lining of love and recollection. By all means, please see this movie.

This is one on my favorite movies of all time. The dialog is fast, funny and SMART. Plus, the gender treatment is fascinating, and not dated in the slightest. But . . . WARNING! Avoid the D3K DVD at all costs. It is truly the most horrendous digital transfer I have ever encountered. The picture is fuzzy and the dialogue almost incomprehensible. I have a five-year-old VHS copy of a TV broadcast of the movie that has much better sound/picture quality. To make things worse, the feature menus on the DVD are poorly designed, so that you cannot tell what you are selecting. And the makers had the audacity to have a whole menu with the credits for production of the DVD. I can't believe how mad I got trying to use this DVD.

Luckily my friend had another version I could compare (and eventually buy). The "His Girl Friday/Cary Grant on Film" version is superb in comparison: Dialog is crisp, picture sharp. It has a bonus documentary, Tony Curtis introduction and the trailer. And IT COSTS LESS than the D3K. This version is a winner.

In Dirty Dancing, Jennifer Grey stars as Frances "Baby" Houseman, a girl who goes on vacation to the Catskills with her father, mother and sister in the summer of 1963. She meets the handsome dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), who works at the lodge where they're staying, and is smitten with him. When she volunteers to fill in for Johnny's dance partner, Baby experiences love and life firsthand from the free-spirited Johnny.

The DVD version of this movie is terrific. The clarity is amazing, the sound is crisp & clear and the bonuses are wonderful. With the bonus features, you get commentary from the movie's creator, a behind-the-scenes featurette (with no audio), the videos for "She's Like the Wind," "I've Had the Time of My Life" & "Hungry Eyes," biographies about the cast & crew (Jennifer Grey, Patrick Swayze, Cynthia Rhodes, Jerry Orbach, Jack Weston, the director, the producer, the writer and the choreographer), a short "Reliving the 60s" documentary, the theatrical trailer and a concert featuring the music from the movie.

If you love Dirty Dancing, I highly recommended getting this DVD. It would be a great addition to add to your collection!

I wasn't sure what to expect from this Israeli film about the love between two male soldiers, and I was pleasantly surprised by the humor and surprisingly moved by the clandestine love between uptight Yossi and the more free-spirited Jagger (called that because he looks and acts like a rock star).

The movie is fairly short--maybe a little over an hour--but it packs a lot in a that short time.

This highly suspenseful thriller showcases Ashley Judd's tremendous talent. Not only is she a phenomenal actress, but also her physical abilities in this movie were impressive. Tommy Lee Jones is as good as he always is. His performances always look so effortless, but never less than stellar. The decision to pair Judd and Jones was genius. They played well off of each other, and had a commanding on screen presence. What a great movie that leaves you guessing on the outcome until the very end!

The French enjoy pairing two incompatible individuals for laughs - and this frothy comedy fits the bill. If there is anything special, it is the charming, over the top performance of Sara Forestier as a (very) sexy, Arab wild child who likes sleeping with conservative men so that she can change their opinions to liberal ones. One of her conquests is a tight older Jewish man whose job is to medically study dead birds. The idea that she is an Arab and he is Jew delights her.

The movie explores the nature of identity and the meaning of names...of course. It also touches upon liberal and conventional politics, racial bias, genocide, child sexual molestation...but only in a superficial way. The movie is much too uneven. Truly interesting issues are tossed into a salad of the absurd. When the movie works it is because of the actress in the lead role. Yes, Sara Forestier won France's Cesar award for best actress...she is fun to watch. She embodies vitality. But seriously, folks, this is a romantic fantasy!

Obviously, the man falls in love and then...

If you want a truly clever comedy that delves into Arab/Jewish prejudices - and a funnier one at that - try the Spanish "Only Human" about the visit of a Palestinian intellectual to his prospective in laws - a truly zany Jewish family. Or...if you want a more believable comedy about an older man falling for a younger woman, then I recommend "Girl in the Cafe."
