I just watched 180 South yesterday, and it speaks a truth to me that I was needing to hear more clearly at just this moment. I've lived only bits and pieces of my life with the clarity of the lense of Chris Malloy's camera. Just enough to recognize truth if I saw it. Too many of my personal moments have been lost in the fog of a mundane set of choices made in fear and flowing from the momentum of a conventional life. Although my diversions allowed me to dip my toe into the realm of global citzenship, my foot had remained dry in the shelter of consumption and comfortable life, but just barely. And since the water level seems to be rising, I wonder if these are the preliminary rapids that lead into greater rapids and the adventures that will easily fill my hip boots.
The images from Easter Island, the premonitions shared regarding the impact upon Patagonia since the 1968 trip by Chouinard, combined to bring the truth home. I will watch this film again, but what I really need to do is follow the advice of Chouinard and get out and experience wild places directly. This film was vital and just that inspiring. And I can't give it much higher praise than that.
